CareerChaudhari was commissioned in the Indian Air Force as a fighter pilot on 29 December 1982. He is a qualified flight instructor, and Instrument Rating Instructor and examiner.
He has a flying experience of over 3800 hours on various fighter aircraft including MiG-21, MiG-23MF, MiG-29 and Su-30MKI.[8]He has held various field positions including commanding a Mig-29 Squadron, commanding a forward base, and later commanding Air Force Station Pune.

The IAF-Chief designate was commissioned in the Fighter stream of the IAF on in Dec 1982. He has flown variety of fighter and trainer aircraft, including missions flown during Op-Meghdoot (Siachen) Op-Safed Sagar – that is during the Kargil conflict with Pakistan in May-July 1999.
